About Dr Anderson
As a child, little Joey enjoyed board games, Star Wars, and trying to understand the details of the theological system he inherited.
Shortly after receiving his undergraduate degree in philosophy (University of Central Florida), he married the love of his life. Joe and Aubyron met at church camp at 16 and married at 22. Joining their lives at such an early age had many advantages but also a lot of difficulties. Aubyron’s investment in Joe’s life and companionship have been invaluable. No finite time is sufficient to express the gratitude.
As Joe continued his quest for understanding, he studied philosophy at the University of South Florida (M.A. & PhD, 2014) and the Sorbonne (Chateaubriand Fellow), writing a dissertation on the problem of evil in the thought of G.W. Leibniz.
Joe’s primary area of study is the relationship between philosophy of religion, metaphysics, and science in 17th-18th century Europe. He has presented his research in seven countries, and published work on the problem of evil, freedom and necessity, and Pascal’s Wager.
He has held full-time positions at the University of Virginia, Allen University, Central Michigan University, and the University of South Florida. At Central Michigan University, he was awarded the Excellence in Teaching Gold Award for the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences in 2017.
His teaching focuses on practical and moral dimensions of belief-formation, including logic, critical thinking, practical epistemology, and the relationship between faith and reason. In these ways, Dr. Anderson hopes to empower his students by giving them a critical distance between themselves and their beliefs.
Joe and Aubyron have two children, Felix and Oliver. Together, they live outside Charlotte, NC.
